"RuPaul's Drag Race" alum Shea Couleé finally owned up to inventing the long-circulating rumor that Meghan Trainor ate Couleé's sandwich while guesting as a judge on the show's ninth season.
"The queen came clean while presenting at the 2023 Streamy Awards on Sunday (August 27), where Trainor won the Rolling Stone Sound of the Year Award for her song 'Made You Look,'" queer news and culture site "them" reported. "While closing out the awards show, Couleé chose to address Trainor directly."
Couleé also served as the event's "Crowd Surfer," Entertainment Weekly noted. She seemed to be circulating among the audience's tables when she stopped not far from where Trainor was sitting and addressed the recording artist.
"I don't know if you have encountered this rumor that when you were on 'Drag Race' as a guest judge you ate a drag queen's sandwich," Couleé said to Trainor, who was seated at a table. "I made that rumor up," she added, as a look of shock came over Trainor's face. "And I'm so sorry!"
Trainor cried out, "I didn't eat the sandwich!" as Couleé continued her confession.
"I just feel so bad, and I just wanted to let you know I said it as a joke once on the mic, and now, I'm very serious, they have no idea, I shouldn't even be telling you this, but I am not only a gorgeous drag queen, but I am a compulsive liar," Couleé went on to say. "I'm so sorry. She didn't eat my sandwich, y'all."
"Trainor laughed as Shea spoke, and the audience eventually applauded when the latter finished her statement," EW recounted.
"We can't be sure when the rumor started to circulate," them detailed, "but it seems like the first time it reached the public was when Trinity the Tuck brought it up during a 2021 episode of The Real House Husband's Podcast.
"Apparently, she took Shea Couleé's sandwich during season 9 during lunch before she could get to it,' Trinity said at the time."
Couleé provided more of a timeline, taking to Instagram with a photo of her at the Streamys in a spectacular golden gown and posting, "First stop, Streamy's. Next stop, The Oscars. Had so much fun last night working the crowd at the @streamys!"
"I'm also glad that I finally got to come clean to @meghantrainor about a dumb rumor I started six years ago when I said she stole my sandwich from craft services while filming season 9 of @rupaulsdragrace," the "All Stars" Season 5 winner added.
In addition to providing closure for the Great Sandwich Caper, the event featured a moving speech by trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, who became a household name last spring after a post about partnering with Bud Light sparked a tsunami of right-wing rage and transphobic hate, leading to a boycott that cost the brand billions.
Accepting the award for Breakthrough Creator, Mulvaney said to the crowd, "532 days ago I made a coming out video that turned into my 'Days of Girlhood' series," in which Mulvaney shared her gender confirmation journey with her followers.
"My life has been changed for the better," the influencer added, "but on the flip side there's also been an extreme amount of transphobia and hate. And I know that my community is feeling it, and I now know that even our allies are feeling it."
Mulvaney went on to add: "I look around this room and I just see so many amazing allies that have platforms, and I think allyship right now needs to look differently, and you need to support trans people publicly and proudly." Cheers erupted as she finished her speech, declaring that she was "gonna go have a beer" in celebration of her win.
