Jennifer Lopez to Star in Film Version of Broadway's 'Kiss of a Spider Woman'

Jennifer Lopez will star in a film adaptation of "Kiss of the Spider Woman," according to Variety.

The 1993 musical was adapted by Terrence McNally from the novel by Argentine writer Manuel Puig, with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb ("Chicago," "Cabaret"). Set in a South American prison, it tells of the unlikely relationship between Molina, an effeminate window dresser imprisoned on morals charges, and Valentina, a political dissident imprisoned for his politics. What brings them together is Molina's obsession with Aurora – a movie diva whose most famous role was that of the Spider Woman.

The musical won seven 1993 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Book of a Musical, Score, and Best Actress for Chita Rivera as Aurora. Lopez will play Aurora in the film to be directed by Bill Condon, who is no stranger to musicals. His previous work includes directing "Dreamgirls," as well as Disney's remake of "Beauty and the Beast." He also co-wrote "The Greatest Showman" and the screenplay to "Chicago" (Oscar nomination.) He won an Oscar for the screenplay to "Gods and Monsters," which he also directed.

An earlier, non-musical film adaptation from director Héctor Babenco – both won wide critical acclaim and major awards attention. William Hurt won the Oscar for best actor for playing Molina.

"The new movie, which is independently financed, is currently searching for an unknown to play Molina. According to a casting breakdown obtained by Variety, the role 'presents as an openly queer and effeminate gay man, but may be on the non-binary/trans femme spectrum.' Rehearsals would start in February with a plan to begin filming in April in New Jersey," Variety said.

Lopez has largely appeared in dramas and comedies on film, but she did launch her film career with a musical role, playing the late Tejano star Selena in 1997's "Selena." "Incredibly, however, this would be her first role in a full-fledged musical," Variety added.
