Emi Ferguson

The Things that Handel and Haydn Society Principal Flutist Emi Ferguson Can't Perform Without

Christopher Ehlers READ TIME: 8 MIN.

Having just delivered a stunning performance of Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 in G Major, one of Boston's classical music rock stars, Emi Ferguson, has given EDGE a look at the products that are vital to her performances.

What's more, Ferguson has just been awarded the 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, which honors American instrumentalists with $25,000 for professional advancement. Up next for Ferguson is Bach's Easter Oratorio with the Handel and Haydn Society on March 31 and April 1, followed by the fascinating "Crossing the Deep" concert on June 1 and 4 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. "Crossing the Deep" will examine the ways in which both European composers and enslaved Africans used scripture to create two completely unique styles of music, and the performance will feature both classical pieces and several spirituals.

Here are the things that the brilliant Emi Ferguson can't perform without.

Garment Tape

Garment Tape

"Playing the flute definitely gets your body twisted in all sorts of shapes often not imagined by clothing designers – so... a little garment tape can go a long way to making sure that there are no mishaps on stage during a performance and you can concentrate fully on the music." $8.48, Amazon.

Almond Oil

Almond Oil

"With H+H I play wooden flutes that move with the changes of the season, and are prone to cracking if you don't give them the moisture they need. Almond oil is my go-to flute oil, and, as a bonus, it's great for cooking and also makes your hands really soft!" $5.79, Whole Foods.

Portable Steamer

Portable Steamer

"Living out of a suitcase can mean constant wrinkles, so it's great to have this amazing portable steamer that packs a punch and makes sure you always look calm and collected on stage!" $49.94, Amazon.

Innisfree Matte Mineral Setting Powder

"With everything being filmed these days, I love this powder for keeping my face oil and shine free." $16, Amazon.

Nuuly Subscription

Nuuly Subscription

"I love my monthly Nuuly subscription that means I always have fresh and new concert clothes, and every-day clothes for whichever climate I am traveling to for a performance!" $88, Nuuly.

Nipple Covers

Nipple Covers

"These are fantastic for making sure cold concert halls don't bring on the headlights! You can buy them at most CVS stores and the great thing is that you wash them with water and they are reusable." $13.99, Ulta.
