Gay-Themed Disney Channel Show Hits Number One Despite Hate Group Boycott

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

As a media watchdog group of the anti-LGBTQ hate group American Family Association, One Million Moms once again proved to be all bark and no bite. Their boycott against the Disney Channel over the introduction of a gay character on the popular "Andi Mack" program garnered a meager 12,120 signatures online, but generated enough interest to garner huge ratings for the cable network.

The Disney Channel's popular "Andi Mack" program proved to be a winner with viewers last week who were eager to see the Season Two premiere that introduced the storyline involving a gay teen character. According to Deadline.com, that episode saw big rating gains - up 72% from the series launch, making it the series' No. 2 telecast to date in total viewers with 2.1 million, kids 6-14 (1.1 million/3.1) and Adults 18-49 (502,000/0.4), in Live + 3. It also ranked as the No. 1 TV telecast in the time slot across youth demos (Kids 6-11 and Kids 6-14).

The episode was the number one cable TV telecast in total viewers.

"With more and more young people coming out as LGBTQ, 'Andi Mack' is reflecting the lives and lived experiences of so many LGBTQ youth around the country," said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. "Television reflects the real life world and today that includes LGBTQ youth who deserve to see their lives depicted on their favorite shows. Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus' story unfold."

Disney has never paid much attention to any of One Million Moms' boycotts, tantrums or warnings. In the past, 1MM president Monica Cole and her harem of harridans have pitched fruitless fits over numerous Disney and Disney Channel properties that have included "action alerts" against the animated series "Doc McStuffins," the live action "Beauty and the Beast," "Good Luck Charlie," ABC's "The Muppets," ABC's "The Real O'Neals," ABC Family's "The Fosters," and Walt Disney World theme park in Orlando.
