Review: Revisit Middle Earth with 'The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy' on 4K

Return to Middle-Earth.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy has been released in every possible format since its big-screen debut, and fans of the sweeping, award-winning series have scooped every one of them up — from the standard Theatrical releases to the lavishly Extended Versions that test even the most diehard fanatic's endurance. The subsequent prequel trilogy that followed almost didn't make it to the big screen until Jackson subsequently rescued it from treachery worse than an orc rebellion: Heavy-handed studio heads out for a quick buck!

Thanks to the director's intervention, when visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro pulled out of the project, Jackson immediately stepped in and breathed all-new life into "The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy," available now for the first time in stunning 4K Ultra HD. The highest, most dynamic resolution for the ultimate in-home theatre experience, 4K appears to have been made for this series of films. Based on the book by Tolkien, and a precursor to the largely more profound trilogy that follows, "The Hobbit" was mostly considered a children's story, but with Jackson at the helm, the story takes on a whole new relevance.

"The Hobbit" follows the story of a young Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman), who gets recruited by a wizened wizard, Gandalf (Ian McKellen reprising his role), to go on a quest to restore the dwarf king to his throne and slay a vicious dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). The film trilogy, beginning with "The Unexpected Journey" and followed by "The Desolation of Smaug," and finally concluding with "The Battle of the Five Armies," is as lush and expansive as expected, and in this 4K Ultra HD presentation looks every bit as marvelous as you remember the first time you saw it in a theater.

The 4K Ultra HD package includes all three motion pictures in both their Theatrical Releases and the Extended Versions, all on 6 discs. It's also the first time that these films are offered in a package together, meaning if you're a purist you'll enjoy the 'theatrical" representations, but if you prefer to dive into the full and extended mythology, then the "extended" versions are your cup of tea — fully restored, every frame is simply magical! There are no bonus features included, but, along with the discs, you can add the films to your Digital Library and enjoy them on the run. Complete your collection with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, also available in 4K Ultra HD separately.

"The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy" is available now on 4K Ultra HD and Digital Combo Pack.
